Favorite Place to be physically active in WV
My favorite daily, activity is a run on the trails at Chief Logan State Park with my 2 dogs. Sometimes we invite friends - mostly people. I've run many trails throughout the state. Dolly Sods and Canaan Valley were the most challenging to me, but I also love to meet socially for a run through the streets of .....well, just about anywhere.
What inspired you to get on the MOVE?
I was always active growing up. I couldn't sit still. My parents got me involved in competitive swimming as a child and I continued that pursuit through college. After graduation, I fell in love with running when I joined some friends preparing for triathlons. For me running was, and still is, a great social opportunity. But sometimes it’s a great chance to be alone. Running helps my clothes fit better, it brings calm and clear thinking, it keeps me outdoors, which I love, and it makes me happy. I get those little endorphins that make me HAVE to smile...
What difference has physical activity made in your life?
I always find I get more than I give, in terms of energy and enthusiasm, when I've finished a run...
What advice would you give someone trying to include physical activity into their life?
Start low and go slow. Have a plan - set a long term goal and short term goals to get there. I had a coach that taught me early in life that “something is better than nothing.” It’s okay to adjust the plan. It’s way better to get out and be physically active with friends!!! Three times a week, is all it takes for noticeable improvement. Aim to make activity a habit. I've heard behaviors become habit after 3 weeks of consistent effort.
Has your activity inspired family and friends to be more active?
My children are outdoor enthusiasts in their own ways - skateboarding, kayaking, running, bicycling, swimming, hiking, and camping.
What is the biggest barrier in your community to being physically active?
Although the city of Logan has limitations, few sidewalks or shoulders to walk or ride on, there are opportunities to be physically active everywhere - nearby parks, school tracks/ tennis/ ball/ fitness facilities, private gyms, park/ town pools. All I really need is a good pair of walking/ running shoes, and a shorter list of excuses, to stay fit and feel good!
How do you help others in your community get physically active?
I support physical activity in my community every time I invite a friend to the Park or encourage those I meet on the trails, as well as through promotion and participation in organized activities like the "On the Move" community and school walks planned for this spring...
What can others do to help get their community on the MOVE?
Anyone can help support healthy activity the way I have, by sharing our stories, successes, challenges, surprises, and by setting an example and acknowledging efforts of others.
Thanks Robin Weiner, for being a West Virginian on the MOVE!
