West Virginia on the Move promotes a physically active lifestyle to West Virginias through three target areas: Schools, Seniors and Communities. We recognize that the sedentary challenges facing our state must be addressed at every level of the community. We continually assess results and expand our programs to ensure that we are strategically making the greatest impact.

Since 2005, we have awarded 64 grants to schools in 31 West Virginia counties to increase physical activity opportunities and environments for students, staff and families. The program is currently supported through funding from WVU Children's Hospital Foundation. Additional support from End Childhood Obesity Race (ECHO) and The CARDIAC Project.

Communities on the Move! Pilot Grant Program Report

The mobility and isolation issues senior citizens face are even more challenging in WV, because of our mountains and transportation systems. Through our relationship with the WV Bureau of Senior Services, and funding from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, Inc., we have partnered with senior centers to open up a whole new world of physical activity - the virtual world, that is. Seven senior centers in different counties have been awarded mini-grants for purchasing Nintendo Wii Game Systems. Now, seniors at these centers can bowl, or play tennis-without leaving the building. In order to assess the effectiveness of this program, WVOM has partnered with Dr. Dina L. Jones, PT, PhD, of WVU.

Since 2007, we have promoted a physically active lifestyle in Boone, Lincoln, Logan, Mingo and Wyoming counties with funding from The Logan Healthcare Foundation. With our partners in Southern WV, we are building best practices so that other WV communities can follow the example set by Southern West Virginia!

The 6-week walking group challenge  can occur at any time of year and members can walk independently, in pairs or as a group. Participants can track either steps or minutes. Each group decides its own "rules" and what's best for members.
